アルバム「街～Machi」は、まさに街の音。街での生活の経験が人それぞれ異なるように、街にはさまざまな音が溢れている。ただし、Waikiki Championsの街は、シティポップの滑らかでのんびりした雰囲気とは異なる。きらびやかな都会のファサードと隠れたアンダーグラウンドクラブの間に存在する、オルタナティブな街のよう。ロック、パンク、エクスペリメンタル、エレクトロニック、ヒップホップのさまざまな影響をタペストリーに織り込み、夕暮れから日の出まで都会の夜を巡る、忙しくスリリングでありながら夢のような旅のように感じられる。

「街～Machi」のバックグラウンドは、Waikiki Championsが長年にわたって開催しているイベント「AOBA NU NOISE」に見ることができる。長年にわたり、このイベントは 21 世紀のレフトフィールドミュージックの国際的な物語を伝え、東京のにせんねんもんだい、ロンドンを拠点とするBo NIngen、サンフランシスコのDeerhoofまでのアーティストが出演した。同時に、バンドは故郷の仙台についての物語を伝えるためにこの場所を利用し、何世代にもわたる地元アーティストの発展と探究の拠点としてきた。

Waikiki Championsは、そのバックグラウンドを活かし、『街～Machi』を自分たちだけではなく、自分たちの故郷の街や、どこにでもある街についてのアルバムにした。このテーマを探求するため、彼らは仙台を拠点とするMC Misz、Bo NingenのTaigen Kawabe（アルバムのマスタリングも担当）、食品まつりaka Foodmanなどのコラボレーターを迎え、多様性を持ちながら常にリズム、ベース、グルーヴを強く意識したサウンドを素晴らしいものに仕上げている。

“街~Machi” is the sound of the city. Just as everyone experiences life in a city differently, the city is full of different sounds. Waikiki Champions’ city is a different place from the smooth, laid back atmosphere of City Pop though: it’s an alternative city that lives between the cracks in the shiny urban facade and the hidden underground clubs. It weaves together a range of rock, punk, experimental, electronic and hip-hop influences into a tapestry that feels like a hectic and thrilling, yet also dreamlike, journey through an urban night from dusk until sunrise.

Part of “街~Machi”’s background can be found in the Waikiki Champions’ long-running Aoba Nu Noise event. Over the years, the event has told an international story of 21st century leftfield music, hosting acts from Tokyo’s Nisennenmondai to London-based Bo Ningen to San Francisco’s Deerhoof. At the same time, the band have used it to tell a story about their home city of Sendai, making it a base for the development and exploration of generations of local artists.

Waikiki Champions draw on that background to make “街~Machi” an album not just about themselves but of their home city and the idea of a city anywhere. To help them explore this theme, they bring in collaborators like Sendai-based MC Misz, Taigen Kawabe of Bo Ningen (who also mastered the album) and 食品まつりaka Foodman to greate a sound that’s diverse but always highly conscious of rhythm, bass and groove.
